I just got my first mac, a Sawtooth G4 400. My usual system is a Athlon\WinXP.

I can't start the mac normally, I have to use a power strip. The power button is lit and when i press it nothing happens, but the reset button works.
The main problem is when i boot up i get an electronic tone then the normal mac start up bong. From there I get a screen that ask if I want to shut down or boot, if so type "mac-boot". I do that and the machine will open up and run OSX with no other problems.
I've tried repartitioning my hd to 3 partitions all under 8 gigs, using " set-defaults" "reset-all" in firmware, and checking the ram for problems. I've formatted and used a clean os install but still no luck.
Any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks,

Victor

wow, seems like no one's touching this...

try pressing the CUDA button on the motherboard. you're going directly into open firmware, which doesn't sound good. not sure what would cause that, to be honest, other than something that would stop booting completly...

Check if it boots normally if you hold down the F key (letter F), if it does, setting the startvolume in the System Preferences might help.

In the Open Firmware console type "printenv" to list the configuration variables. Look for one called "auto-boot?", if its value is false, enter "setenv auto-boot? true"
