It would definitely interest me, though I haven't heard of anything like it.

I asked is something like this was available about a year ago. No answers then. I'm still wondering myself.

I have seen one of these before, I believe it was part of Konfabulator "widget package"; however, I can't seem to find it right now...

Sorry.

There was a screensaver that worked with Jaguar that would paste the icons of Mail and Proteus (as well as a couple of other applications) on to a corner of your screen when it was in screensaver mode. I found it tremendously useful, but sadly it hasn't been updated for use with Panther. I also forget what it was called. Can anyone help me? Maybe we could convince the author to update or open source it.

Update: it was called IconSticker.

It doesn't work with Panther, no. It's been a while since I've looked at it, but if you sent the developer an email he might update it. If you do, let us all know what the response was...I wouldn't mind having it back myself.

This is one of those quasi-useless things I would think Apple would jump all over.

I remember a movie once where they were using Sun systems that had an envelope swirling around in circles with the number or eMail... It was VERY cool...

I would be very interested in something like this. I would think that it wouldn't be that difficult for someone that knew what they were doing...

Hmm, I'm not sure if Entourage has the auto-updating icon though? That's what this little app was originally released to deal with.

Hmm that would be a cool thing to have. Off to make a screensaver with that functionality!

What should the screensaver be???

Entourage just shows whether you have new mail or not by updating the 'E' in the dock to show an 'E' with an envelope over top of it. I don't really care how many messages I have; just notification while the screensaver is running would be cool.

IconSticker is the only one I know but you could use this one as a temporary solution:

MailHere

The animations is kinda spiffy

The great thing about IconSticker was that it overlaid the icons on top of whatever screensaver was already running. I think that would be the ideal solution...that way you don't even have to worry about making a screensaver that everyone likes.

Hmmm... that would be tricky. How about something for an IM client too? It could show if you get a new message! Just had a flash, I think this would actually be pretty easy, you just need to know when the mail comes in and when you get an IM. Hmmm...... *runs off to ponder this*

Hmm, here's some good news...apparently IconSticker already IS open source.

http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.p...d/IconSticker/

I'd love to see someone take another crack at this. I don't have the dev tools installed, so I can't say whether the build up on SourceForge works on Panther or not.

Good news everyone!
It compiles and runs fine if you install the plugins. (OmniWeb and Mail)
I'm going to see if I can write any more plugins for it now... (Adium being first in line.)

I don't give much assistance, and if the mail plugin doesn't work tell me (I know of a way to get it to work but I have to find it)
Ah here it is,
In terminal enter this
Code:
defaults write com.apple.mail EnableBundles YES

I've done the terminal thing and I still don't see my Mail icon in the screen saver (it currently has 2 new messages). The OW one works fine...

Is there a limit of only one icon in the screen saver at a time? Or...?

Well I checked httpmail-plugin.

Code:
defaults write com.apple.mail EnableBundles 1 defaults write com.apple.mail BundleCompatibilityVersion 1
if that still doesn't work make sure it's in the right folder.
~/Library/Mail/Bundles/

I also have Proteus working here also.
(It's just turn it on and then it works. It's nice)

Yeah, it all works perfectly..it's great to have this little utility back. Hopefully people can throw together some plugins to allow the other chat clients to display as well and this can become useful to just about everyone!

forgive my ignorance, i'm new to osx. but bundles isn't showing under mail in the library. this is in my account library. the overall library doesn't have "mail" in it. again, if i'm missing something obvious, i apologize.
