1) Never use Norton products on a Mac. Ever.
2) Buy DiskWarrior and allow it to fix the errors.
3) See #1.

Eesh, I'll fourth that. DiskWarrior only. Never let Norton touch your drive unless it wants to be put out of its misery - Norton is one of those "assisted suicide" doctors.

Where did your internal support learn about what tools to use, from a MacMall catalog?

Norton = Bad.

DiskWarrior would have had a pretty good chance at recovering your drive.

It did when Norton destroyed one of my hard drives - DiskWarrior took about 3 minutes and all was well.

It did for me as well, to a point. It got the hard disk mounting again, although I had to reinstall the OS as there were many files for which the directory information that told what folder they were supposed to be in got hosed by Norton. So what happened is that DiskWarrior scavenged the disk, and put all the files that were cut off from the directory in a "Recovered Items" folder. This resulted in a folder with a billion PkgInfo and .DS_Store files all crammed together, with suffixes added to keep their names distinct. There were also a bunch of small files used by the BSD subsystem and whatnot in there. However, this is perfectly fine if what you want to do is find your important files for work and recover them to a backup disk. DiskWarrior is great, and I've also heard some very nice things about DataRescue for this. Norton, after my experience, will never touch my drive again.
