I'm looking for a good 3D design app, but most of the good ones I've seen cost quite a bit. Does anyone know a good app that is pretty cheap, or preferably free? I'm a beginner at 3D design, so it doesn't have to be super-powerful, just allow me to design and render clean models. I'm mostly going to use it for icon and logo design.

Too bad Apple doesn't have i3D.

Try blender (alternate link). I think it runs inside of X11 on MacOS X, but it is one of the supported platforms, and blender is open source.

Actually it runs native without the need of X11. The interface is still very unixish though.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

I think Strata has a free version of their app. At least they used to.

EDIT:
Looks like they might not be offering it anymore.

But I found that Maya has a Personal Learning Edition that you can get for $20. Looks like a really good deal.

Get it here: http://www.aliaswavefront.com/eng/pr...le/index.shtml

Give wings 3d a look, it's got a nice set oh Nurbs tools. Blender is good, but also funky.

Wings 3D is completely free, here's the site for it. It's been a while since ~I used it, but there's a good community out there doing great stuff withg it.

Moonray; ya... that was my first thought too... but I think that most people starting out in 3d don't enjoy doing 3d matrix calculations in their head like I do...

I think Blender is pretty cool. The Yafray rendering-engine looks really promising and it already supports global illumination and photons.
