I just got my first Mac, a used PowerMac G4. I have a few questions. The first is regarding FireFox. One of my favorite sites uses complex scripting that fails under Safari but works in FireFox. The only problem is, scrolling in FireFox is extremely sensitive using the mousewheel. Works fine in Safari. Not sure why it's so sensitive in FireFox. Is there a way to fix this?

Second, does anyone know of an MP3 player for OSX that can utilize either Winamp or VST DSP plugins? I am a big fan of headphone compensation plugins, and there are several for Winamp, as well as one that works on the Mac but only exists as a VST plugin. Unfortunately, I haven't found a player that recognizes either plugin architecture. Kind of strange, since the specs for Winamp DSP plugins have been available for quite some time.

Third, the refresh rate on my Iiyama VisionMaster Pro 17 is being incorrectly detected as a maximum of 75 hz in 1152x860, which happens to be the resolution that I like the most on this display. I know for a fact it supports this refresh rate, and even supports it beyond this resolution. Panther even lets me choose 85 hz at 1280x960, but not 1152x860. I have used 1152x860 on my PC for years with this display. The only solution I have found is a shareware utility that requires registration. I'd rather go digging around in a dozen files and enable the support manually, personally, and get the job done for free. But I don't know where to look. Any clues?

welcome to macintosh.

I'm sorry I can't be more help regarding your second or third issues, but regarding the first, there is probably some hidden preference you can modify in FireFox's preferences to adjust the scroll acceleration - I'm just not sure what it is. Somebody here will hopefully be able to tell you and/or you might be able to do a forum search for something like "mozilla" and "scrollwheel" or similar.

As a stop-gap, you could try using the latest build of Camino - also based on the Gecko engine, but stripped even further down than FireFox, with a real cocoa interface, etc.

(Or if bloat isn't your concern, there's the actual Mozilla, or even Netscape)

Check the mouse software and play with the scroll sensitivity from there.

No clue, macupdate.com or versiontracker.com I'd guess...

I'd sware there was a checkbox to allow the selection of any resolution/refresh rate in Displays.

For the monitor question you can try downloading an app like SwitchRes to see if you can get any more resolutions listed:

Nice! I also found a good VST headphone compensation plugin called Canz3D. I recommend it and AHP to anyone who listens to music through headphones. The improvement is night and day.

Still haven't sorted out the problem with refresh rates on my monitor. Don't really want to pay money for a seemingly trivial thing as a single refresh rate in a single resolution. For now I am running in 1024x768 until I find a solution.

Also don't know about the scroll-wheel sensitivity. This mouse scrolls extremely fast on any setting other than the lowest, which seems to disable scroll acceleration alltogether, which isn't too cool since I have to flick the wheel 100 or so times to scroll a webpage. It's a generic USB optical mouse, so I don't really know what can be done as far as drivers. I'm using the ones builtin to Panther.

I'm not at my mac, but if I recall, the Displays system preference has a box to allow only recommended resolutions. If you uncheck that, you see all.

I don't see that panel on my machine. However, I am not using an Apple display. I am using an Iiyama VisionMaster Pro 17. Maybe that option only shows up with Apple monitors? At any rate, this doesn't seem to be applicable in my situation.

For the monitor problem try starting up next time with it completely off. Wait a couple minutes for your computer to start up, then turn your monitor on and see if their are any more resolutions listed...

I also found this including someone else having problems with this manufacturer:

I would still also just try out SwitchRes and see if it can at least even get the resolution temporarily displayed.
