In Outlook, if I click the "From" header, it will sort the mailbox by sender's name alphabetically. Apple Mail also does this. Furthermore, in Outlook, you can press a letter key, and it will automatically go to the sender's beginning with letter. So if I wanted to get to an e-mail sent by Joe Shmoe, I would start typing J-O-E, and it would bring me to his e-mails. Pretty standard stuff. In Mail, I could have sworn that this worked the same way when I first got it. Then all of a sudden, I started getting a tone (the tone the Mac emits when you are doing something it doesn't approve of) with no ability to search by name this way. I checked my wife's Mailbox in Mail, and her's worked fine. Now her's won't work either. What's going on here? Anyone have any ideas? It's kind of annoying when I have to use the scroll bar to manuall find the e-mails I want by sender's name (or any other column for that matter).

Thanks,
Mike

yep, you can't do a type search to jump to a certain position in a long list of names, but you can certainly just start typing the name into the search field at the top of the window - it's very fast, and you can limit it to whatever field you prefer via the pop-up, or search all the fields at once, including contents (something you couldn't do with the column sorting/typing you apparently wish to use.

Thanks, that seems to work. I just think it's weird that the functionality I spoke of just decided to stop working one day. It's not that the way I want is the best way, it's just what I was used to...
