Resume download feature:

If I have a dynamic connection - specifically a PPP connection. I start the download, let it run a bit. I stop the download in Safari and disconnect my net connection. If I try to resume the download without being connected again, the "resume" feature gets completely messed up. Even once I reconnect to the Internet, when I go to resume, the download starts from the beginning rather then where it left off. I can assure you the resume feature is supported by the HTTP server, and is completely reproduceable. Safari 1.2.x on 10.3.2 & .3.

Sorry if this is a repost - I searched for "safari download bug", "resume bug", & "resume download" and didn't see anything.

The resume download feature works perfectly.

The issue is, the server at the other end must also support it. If it does, you can resume the download where you left off, if it doesn't, you need to start from the beginning.

The server does support it. If I use iGetter, resume works just fine. If I do all the steps except try to resume the download when I'm not connected, it works just fine. This is on many different servers - IIS 5.x, Apache 1.3.29, Apache 2.x. The problem is if you try to resume the file while there is no route to the server, or the server is not reachable, the resume failes even when you re-establish the route.

Try downloading a file from a server that you know supports resuming. Stop it. Disconnect your ethernet cable. Hit resume. Wait a few seconds. Stop the resume attempt. Plug cable back in. NOW try to resume. What happens?

Why would you do this?

I do not consider this a bug, I consider it user error.

It works just fine when I start a download, unplug my ethernet... hit stop, plug the ethernet back in, and click resume.

In what way is never being able to resume again the logical result of a user hitting "Resume" while his connection is down? Sure, it's strange user behavior, but it sounds like a bug to me.

Erm...that's probably because that doesn't replicate his instructions, in which the crucial step that messes everything up is trying to resume while your connection is down.

Why would you try to resume if your connection is down? It's not like it's going to work.

You might have forgotten you disconnected, or someone else might have disconnected when you weren't by the computer... loads of situations where you might accidentally hit resume with no connection...

Exactly - not everyone has an "always-on" broadband connection. Was anyone able to replicate this so I know it's not just me?????
