A binary of AbiWord 2.11 has been released for OS X. AbiWord is a word processor for GNU/Linux, Windows, SkyOS and now OS X. 2.11 is a development version, they appear to work on an odd/unstable, even/stable numbering system, so 2.2 will be the stable version. I've been trying it out and although it is prett yrough around the edges, it's pretty good for a development version and has serious potential.

it seems quite impressive, with a lot of features. It's not stable enough to use and there seem to be a lot of redrawing artefacts all over the place, but it has serious promise.

I hope they abandon the current interface and try and make the layout of things more mac-like; with a toolbar on every window and palettes for formatting.

The horrible interface of Word is one of the things I hate the most about it, I wouldn't like them to copy it too much.

The development of a native Abiword has been a one man show and its impressive that he could do so much.

Ooh la la, you weren't kidding. 2.11 is very impressive, I'll be watching for future versions of AbiWord. In the meantime, I bet most of you have heard of OpenOffice.org, but have you guys given NeoOffice/J a try? It's based on OpenOffice.org.

NeoOffice/J, also, has come a long way. The interface looks a lot like Window 98, but it's a great substitute to Word already for me, the suite is very feature-full. I succesfully imported a Word document (albeit not the most complex document, no images or tables, etc) just perfectly. I'm looking forward to this new bunch of open source office suites coming to Mac OS X.

Cool stuff.
