I have a movie in AVI format and it is an Quicktime format but when I try and open it and it states it cannot open as the proper compressor cannot be found....
Where do I find this or should I just update Quicktime?

If you have a movie in avi format it's not QuickTime format.

Anyway, it will probably playable in QuickTime with this:

Or with VLC media player (separate app):

Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Not sure what OS you're running, but some AVI movies can't be played under OS X. Specifically, AVI movies encoded with the Indeo Video codecs. Indeo has never been ported to OS X.

Just a slightly more in-depth explanation:

AVI is not a video format, it's just a container file. It contains video and audio streams that have been compressed with a certain codec, e.g. DivX, Indeo Video, etc. While QuickTime can understand the AVI container file format, it cannot play every video stream format that could possibly be contained in AVI containers out of the box. However, you can download QuickTime Components for the DivX codec from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/ (this is the most popular format for video in AVIs at the moment).

That's a little bit of a simplification, of course.

Yeah, the Official Divx codec is VERY nice now...

After adding XviD Delegate < http://www.insaneness.com/xvid.html > I can play any DivX or XviD I download these days. Dunno why, but I feel more comfortable watching videos in Quicktime Player.

/me Thinks back to Stux's DivX player for OS 9 and Cringes...
