I downloaded a windows media file from the web and upon opening it I get the following message in my web browser:

In order to play this file, you need to upgrade your media player to a version compatible with Windows Media Rights Manager V7. Select View Compatible Players below to see a list of compatible media players.
If your current media player does not have a Windows Media Rights Manager V7 compatible version, you should select a different player with the Windows Media Rights Manager V7 identifier.

I have version Media Player 9 for OS X and was not able to find any updates regarding the rights manager. Anyone know how to resolve this?

you may just be stuck, but what browser are you using?

It might be worth downloading the file itself and trying to play it when it's not embedded in a browser.

It is possible that the player is ok, but you simply don't have the rights to play it.
How did you obtain this movie?

Microsoft did not port the Rights Manager to the Mac.

That's the reason why all those iTunes alternatives do not work with a Mac. They use DRM and Windows Media Player for OS X doesn't support DRM.
