I've been trying to have a videoconference with a Windows XP user using AIM 5.5 since the beta of iChat 2.1 was released. The results I have seen so far are less than satisfying. On a Mac to Mac conference, the quality is outstanding. With a Windows user, audio frequently cuts out. The video I receive from them is alright (not even close to the Mac-Mac quality), but the video they get from me is pixelated. When I open connection doctor, the local video is running at about 10 frames per second, but only 38 kbps! The remote video is 4 fps and around 125 kbps per second. For comparison, when I talk to someone else on a mac, my video is 20 fps and 170 kbps.

I assume the glitch is on the PC end, but it is still disconcerting to say the least. I wonder if anyone has had better luck with this, and if so, how? Can I expect this to get better, or am I exempt from talking to Windows users until iChat for Windows enters the product market?

I get 10 fps to and from the windows user at around 120 kb/s. Perhaps the person you are chatting with has a slower connection or an older computer?

Granted that isnt anywhere near what I get mac to mac. I have gotten 30 fps and 280k/s on Mac to Mac chats. But its better than nothing.

I think it has to do with 2 things. first it has to do with the Camera they are using. If they use a USB camera it's not going to be as good. If the Camera is USB2 that's a different story. Also if there connection is lower than yours or vice versa. That will cause problems as well. I've done 2 video chats so far Mac-PC and the PC camera looks more pixelated even on a fast connection. I wonder if an iSight would work with a PC.
