Hey there,
I was thinking about purchasing Macaroni to automatically perform maintenance on a G3 running Panther 10.3.3 which I leave on 24/7/365 and use as a server. However, while cruising Macaroni's FAQ's I noted this:
Q: What if I always leave my Mac on overnight?
A: Then you may not need Macaroni. You still may find it convenient, since it provides a simple interface to monitor and customize scheduled jobs. But if you just want to run the standard system-maintenance tasks, and you always leave your Mac on overnight, and you don't want to monitor or customize these tasks, you don't need to use Macaroni.
So... I may not need it (though am unsure). My question is: since I personally never go in and perform anything manually (not knowing too much UNIX) even though the machine is always on, does the above statement say that Panther will do it without my having to do anything? Because if leaving the G3 on allows Panther to perform maintenance without my knowledge, I suppose I don't need Macaroni. But if Panther doesn't automatically do anything without my knowledge, I suppose I do need Macaroni (since I have never scheduled anything).
Thanks in advance,
BD

I leave my Mac on all the time; however, defintely find a critical use for Macaroni as it performs that much needed UNIX maintenance commands at whatever scheduled time you specify...no hassle, no remembering...never a problem! It's awesome.

You could always just edit your crontab for free...
I use anacron. I installed it through fink. It's free and very easy to configure. I can't recommend paying money for things like Macaroni when free, relatively painless solutions are available.

Free is always an alternative; however, I felt like supporting the Macintosh dev community for once...

Well,
It is a small fee (comparatively)... so since I don't know much about fink, etc. it seems to be worth it for purposes that I know I wouldn't be messing anything up by installing it and letting it work like it should. Instead of taking the time to learn command-line stuff and trusting myself with the server's OS.
Thanks guys,
BD
