Anyone tried the Preview that is out there?

Does anyone know if it is time limited? Acceptable for day-to-day use, with the understanding that it is not production software?

Well, Maury over at RAILhead Design gave a review of Entourage, and its not a pretty one so far. (http://www.railheaddesign.com/)

Ouch! This is very disappointing. We rely heavily on Exchange servers here at my place of employment, and currently us Mac users are stuck with using Outlook in Classic. We've been waiting for a long time for Entourage to gain full support, but it looks like that is a pipe dream. I guess we're going to be stuck in Classic for the foreseeable future. Thanks Microsoft! You rock!

What are the chances that Apple could build Exchange support into Mail? Is this an impossibility?

Mail.app in Panther does support Exchange through IMAP; however, it's not very good if you ask me...

I concur. It's good if you just need to quickly check your e-mail, but for day-to-day intensive use, it's lacking.

And like Maury, I've found Entourage definitely lacking in exchange support. I do like the new 3-pane layout. Junk filter is still inferior to Mail's. I haven't really had a chance to pound on Excel or Word. And I never use PowerPoint.

Apple seems to building in more and more exchange support though -

We can now sync our address book with Exchange via iSync and, if the Exchange server has LDAP turned on, we can access/search the global address list with Address Book and Mail.

iCal can add exchange style appointments if they are emailed to you (I think, right? I know it's far from ideal)

& Mail, which could always do the IMAP thing to exchange servers that had IMAP turned on, can now block out folders like "contacts" that used to show up over straight IMAP if it knows the account is an exchange account.

Finally I can read, (but unfortunately not post) to public folders using Mail.app
--------

Is it severely lacking? Absolutely. But it's a lot further along than we were in 10.2, and it's only going to get better.

How do you read public folders with Mail?

They just show up in my mailbox drawer. (I didn't have to do anything special).

Specifically, my drawer looks something like this (simplified):

In
Out
Drafts
Sent
Trash
Junk
On My Mac
Exchange Account
•Deleted Items
•Deleted Messages
•Drafts
•Junk E-Mail
•Outbox
•Public Folders
--Internet News
--Open Forum
--Stegner Contacts
•Sent Items

The "Open Forum" is a public mailbox where people from my law school post all kinds of random things (apartment offers, textbooks for sale, etc.). The "Stegner Contacts" is, I believe, a list of contacts, which, though I can see their names, I am unable to see any additional info for.

This is how it has shown up since 10.0 (though then it had additional "mailboxes" for my personal contacts, calendar, etc, which were useless, but that disappeared with 10.3's mail/Exchange type account)

It's not perfect certainly, but it's better than nothing.

(FWIW, I know the school used some older form of exchange, from at least August 2001 until recently which worked this way, and now they've upgraded to Exchange 2003 and things still work as they used to)

Must be something with our setup. I've never had the the public folders show up like that. I only see folders that are part of my account.

The only thing we can hope for is continued development - since its not yet shipping, there's still time to bug fix.

Microsoft does do that, right? Bug fix, I mean. They do that sometimes, right?

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
