apologies if this has been covered before, a forum search didn't find anybody in the same situation as me.
the thing is.. i can't get ANYTHING that uses flash to display in safari, at all.
where flash content should be, i just get empty space. no broken icons, nothing at all.
i went to macromedia.com and installed the flash plugin.. no change.
does anybody know a solution to this?

maybe you are using PithHelmet or a custom style sheet that blocks flash content?

ok - are you sure you have the plug-in properly installed?
it should be in either
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
or ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
I know you said you downloaded and ran the installer, have you quit and re-launched Safari since then?

also, are you sure you haven't unchecked "Enable plug-ins" in Safari's security preferences?

Hmmm... I'd never thought about unchecking the "Disable Plug-ins" - could be useful for turning off the Safari Enhancer, etc.
When I'm trying to ponder Safari performance it would be nice for a newbie to KNOW what plug-ins (version #s even) are active without having to figure out where to find the relevant Library and sub-folder.
Would it be asking too much for the Preferences to display (next to the option to enbable/DISable Plug-ins) what plugins are installed?

You can already just simply choose Installed Plug-ins from the Help menu.

Hopefully someone can help me out. When I go to a page such as www.usatoday.com in which they use flash to cycle through graphics, it says to get Flash 6. Well, when I go to the Macromedia website and download the latest version of Shockwave, it never seems to get updated in Safari. When I check the installed plugins, it indicates "Shockwave Flash 5.0 r58", but in the /Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder it indicates version 7. Any ideas?

I may be wrong, but I think the flash plug-in is different than the shockwave plug-in.
Try searching version tracker for flash, and you'll get a link to what you need.

Check the ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder. That version is really old and hasn't shipped with the OS since before Jaguar. You probably have an older copy of the plug-in in your personal plug-ins folder that is overriding the newer version.
