The latest nightly of thunderbird now has the spiffy Pinstripe theme.
The email client is pretty good I think, but suffers from no OS X address book integration. Incidentally you can vote for this feature on this page .

Not to be rude, but why would anyone use this over Mail, or even Entourage?

I wouldn't use it instead of Mail, but I do use it on my machines at work running Linux. I also prefer it to the huge piece of bloatware/security hole opener that you mentioned.

Its got quite a few nice features that Mail doesn't - or even Entourage. Its also free. I use it on my Windows laptop and like it. It needs a few more things and then I'll be happy to use it on my Mac too.

It uses a Bayesian filter, just like Mail does. It should be just as good. Thunderbird filters as well on my roommate's PC as Apple's Mail filters on my Mac.

Actually, Mail's filter isn't Bayesian; it uses a slightly different technique. Seems to work just as well, but the two techniques can be combined for even better (though slower, since you're using two filters) spam blocking.

Cool. I'll have to download the latest nightly. Thunderbird is my second favorite mail application on the Mac...Mail.app is the first. With Address Book integration or even integration with my LDAP server I might make the switch from Mail.app to Thunderbird. It is a nice mail client with some nice features, some of which aren't in Mail.app. The junk filter works really well, whatever it is. And with the new pinstripe theme, along with other nice themes, it will look even better. It's definitely worth a download.

Finally, it looks great. I don't use it and I'm pretty happy with Mail.app but I voted for that feature since I recognize it's important. Plus I use Firefox and love Pinstripe. If only they could look this good on Windows.

I still haven't settled on an e-mail program, but the new Pinstripe theme for TB is really sweet; it almost makes it a new app. It's definitely worth a look if, like me, you are still shopping for THE e-mailer.

Thank you. Unfortunately, voting won't make the feature appear, but it will become more of a priority (I'm thinking of writing a letter/email/report to Apple requesting that maybe Mr Hyatt make this happen as he is still a big part of the Mozilla project).

I know. I vote for plenty of stuff that never gets looked at. My current pet peeve is this one. Good luck in your efforts.

I've got in contact with someone from the Safari team, but I'm not certain whether anything will come of it.
However, momentum is picking up on the bug page and someone I think I recognise as one of the Adium developers may be taking a look at it.

Interesting... I wonder how many people use it... I'll stick with mail, but it's nice to see that we have well designed alternatives should Mail.app start to suck.

My wife uses Mail.app, and I use Thuderbird on our computers; that way our mail never gets mixed up (to those wondering why anyone would want it over Mail.app). And, actually, thunderbird has more configurability in the settings area; I particularly like how I can specify that it ALWAYS use TLS on a non-standard port for sending mail. Mail.app just assumes that you want to do SSL on non-25 ports (as does Entorage [gag]).
