Hi:
re: SOFTWARE side of audio input via USB...

I've just gotten a TASCAM US-122 to input mic input via USB into my TiBook. And even though I've got the drivers loaded (& restarted), the SOUND preferences panel shows the Tascam, but doesn't show any LEVEL on it (the Tascam itself *does*) - whereas if I select INTERNAL mic - the sound LEDs bop up & down as expected.

Salesman tells me that I shouldn't expect this to show in pref panel, but will need something that accesses "CORE sound" operations of OS X. Well, I was hoping just to use the freeware "Audio In" or "Audio Recorder" - but I'm not seeing a signal there, even though "Audio In" does show the Tascam in its device selection.

Salesman is suggesting I may need to buy Garage Band or something to even be able to get the TiBook to register the USB input. This doesn't sound right. Anybody know? Is Garage band valuable enough for somebody that does *not* plan to do any mixing that I should get it anyway (I'm just recording narrative material).

I would really think that any of the built-in apps should work for you. Check your audio preferences and make sure you've got this new device selected as the input source (if you haven't already).

If you're just looking to try another app, try SparkME. I've enjoyed using this app, and it's totally free, and quite powerful.

FYI, Spark is no longer maintained. Check out Sound Studio for simple two-track recording (it does use CoreAudio):

Also, Audacity is quite promising. Open source, check it out:

All glory to the hypnotoad.

Thanks for the good leads, guys! As it turns out, my weird problems came from drivers needing to be updated from mftr web site to work with Panther... but it's great to learn about the shareware!

By the way, if I'm wanting to mix some background music behind the lecture voice, should I be looking at Sound Source ... or ... GarageBand ? Simplicity and ease of use is probably the issue -- I'm not mixing 16 tracks or symphonic quality.
