How to install and run X11 apps?

I downloaded X11 from apple and installed the package. I then went to Tucows and browsed the linux section and installed two apps (that are X11) and can't for life of me figure out how to install the software. I am assuming that X11 will let me run some Unix apps but am completely new to the linux enviorment and way of doing things. I would appreciate if someone could fill me in on how to get started and if there are any great apps out there for web development.

Mac OS X/Darwin with X11 is not Linux, so you can not just run Linux applications.

You may want to try Fink:
