Hey there,
I see a ton of applications which will allow you to transfer .mp3's FROM an iPod to a Mac, but I'm wondering if there's one which allows the transferring of .mp3's TO an iPod from a Mac without using iTunes.

I have a fairly lengthy collection of .mp3's, but since I use Slim Devices' SlimServer 5 to listen to my music, I haven't ever imported it into iTunes. And since I don't really need to, I'm wondering if there's an application which will allow me to do the reverse of what all of the applications I currently have read up on, allow.

Thanks in advance if you have an idea,
BD

you might be able to do this with the finder (if you set up the iPod to act as a hard drive, and then navigated to the appropriate invisible folders), but then again, I'm not sure how you'd make sure the iPod's library recognized everything, or how you'd add playlists and the like.

Using iTunes really isn't bad - you should give it a shot.

why dont you just change your itunes library directory to point to the location of your mp3 files? then you can use itunes to manage them and it will work with the ipod. easy fix.

Yeah, the thing is that I don't keep my .mp3's on my desktop G3 (which is where I'm connecting my new iPod)... I keep them on a separate (headless, run with Remote Desktop) server G3 on my home network which my desktop G3 is rarely connected to. I do this since I have my SliMP3 player in the living room connected to the server G3 and don't use my desktop G3 to play music.

So, that's why I never bothered to import the collection to my desktop G3 or why I don't think pointing the library to the remote server G3 will work (since it will rarely be connected).

I'm guessing that since nobody's mentioned any software, the only way to successfully transfer .mp3's to an iPod (with ID3 Tag info intact) is with iTunes?

Thanks,
BD

you only launch itunes when you're connecting to the G3 and sync the ipod once. use itunes, its the best way.

I suppose that wouldn't be too much to ask of myself. I suppose I'll begin the iTunes import before lunch.

Thanks,

again...dont have to import. just set up your mp3 folder as your itunes library. if the only time you need to sync and use itunes is when you are connected to the drive...then it should be the easiest way.

I thought you have to have itunes because when you put songs on your ipod doesn't it create a file which it uses to figure out which folder that music was put in to? and it also uses this file that itunes creates to compare libraries?

I think Audion can transfer MP3 data onto an iPod.
