is there any way to index file names of back up CDs and DVDs (indexing the volumes) so you have a simple catalogue that's easily searchable without having to insert disks prior to searching. In OS 9 I used to use FindIt by Iomega. Now I need something that works in Panther.

Try Disktracker, I use it to catalogue all my cd's.
