Hey,
Someone has been harassing one of my friends online, saying really inappropriate and stalkerish things to her. I got the kid to direct connect to me, thinking I would use AIM Sniff to get his IP, but it didnt work. Any suggestions as to go about finding out more about this person?

I'd just have your friend block or ignore the person if their client supports it. Not really the answer you were looking for, but is it really important you find out more about them? If they create a new account, let them waste their time... it will only take a second to block them.

To be done after you direct connect.
1. In the terminal Type: "netstat -n -f inet" (without the quotes).
2. In the IP's under "Foreign Address", find the one that at the end has ".4443" after the IP.
3. That is the IP you are directly connected to on AIM, The IP are the numbers before the ".4443".

Heed the People's Court motto: "Don't take the law into your own hands. Take 'em to court."
File an abuse complaint with AOL. Include logs. Don't be retarded and try to retaliate.

I just want to see if it is someone from my college, because of the nature of what was said. I could then refer the IP to the office of student conduct and let them deal with it.

Better yet... in terminal type "netstat -n -f inet | grep 4443" after you direct connect.

But save yourself time and just block the jerk.
It's probably some 11 year old clown... and you will waste time tracking him down only to get the "We're taking care of it" line.
