I'm not sure if I know how to explain the problem. Mail just suddenly crapped out on me. When i start it up, it freezes and I get the spinning wheel of death. In the little dialog box it has frozen at a number of points. It will either say it is indexing messages, fetching them, or preparing to fetch them. Either way, the program simply freezes.

The last operation I did prior to this happening was my weekly carbon copy cloner backup this morning. So unfortunately, I don't have a pre-problem version to run. The problem happens whether I am online or offline.

I'm running 10.3.3 and have all the latest software updates.

Any suggestions?

Out of curiosity, do you have a TON of messages in your Inbox?

35 at present. I wouldn't call that a ton.

I think I may have fixed the problem -- basically by trashing all the files. Fortunately, I had my archived mail backed up.

What the heck caused this. At one point, I got a message saying that the folder was "in use by user (my name). It let me open mail if I did it read only. But that didn't really help and I didn't get the same message on the next startup.

Oh well, I needed to retrain my junk filter anyway.
