Like many of you, I had been struggling to get a audio & video connection going between my Mac and a PC user. I am using the newest version of iChat 2.1 and the PC user is using the latest AIM 5.5.

We were able to connect to each other while on the local network (my household simple network) but when trying to connect over the internet iChat would tell me that an unknown error occured, and the PC would get an error that they couldn't connect, possibly due to firewall issues.

The PC user is on the home network using a Linksys WRT54G wifi router (the PC is connected wirelessly). After reading all the info I could here, and at Apple's discussions, I turned to the MacNN IRC chatroom and talked with vmarks.

We both agreed that it was the router causing the trouble. I took his recommendations (below) and I am now able to have a great audio & video chat with the PC user.

1 - Assign a static IP address to the PC
2 - Make sure router firmware is up-to-date
3 - Use Forwarding to forward the correct ports to the PC. I used the range 1024-5000 and allowed both UDP and TCP.

Once this was enabled, it worked the first time.

Thanks very much to vmarks for taking the time to chat with me, I hope this is helpful to others.

Mike

Maybe this has been asked before but does audio only chat work between iChat 2.1 and AIM 5.5 on a PC?

If so, how do you do it when the machines are on different subnets?

Our problem is that we have a text but NO talk chat, which makes me suspect that my iBook 500 MHz, OSX 10.3.3, internal microphone is flaky. The PC can activate a talk chat but my iBook can't.

As a network administrator at a university department, I appreciate the flexibility of our DHCP server and would like to avoid giving anyone a fixed IP address. There are just too many laptops that come in and out randomly and sporadically.

Thing is you don't need a static IP for the PC. I've done it a couple of times with people using dynamic IP's Though having one doesn't hurt.

The Mac has DCHP supplied IP. Have you managed to make a audio only connection between Windows/XP and iChat?
