Since upgrading to Panther, Safari is having problems handling the download of .dmg files. For some some reason, Safari renames the extension .dmg to .dms, making the file unrecognizable by the system. I have to manually rename the extension to .dmg to be able to use the file.
It's nothing major, the integrity of the file is intact, but it's just annoying having to rename them all the time.
What can be causing that?
Thanks!!!

I would recommend you download Panther Cache Cleaner. In the demo mode, you can select "Rebuild LS Database" from the Maintenance menu. That should probably fix it.
If not, then I'd try these things:
1) Remove any third party system hacks or themes you may have installed.
2) Delete the Safari prefs

You are using or have been using some download accelerator. Completely deinstall it, including its internet plug-in etc.

Yes, I'm using SpeedDownload. I'm not about to uninstall it since I paid for it and using it everyday...
Normally any download is directed to SD, but sometimes .dmg files are downloaded directly by Safari and renamed .dms
So is it a problem with Safari or SpeedDownload?

It's directly with SpeedDownload II...I'm not sure if a recent update to SD will help things; however, this has been brought up numerous times and the only way to rid yourself of the .dms images is to use the SDII un-installer to remove all associated SDII files...

SpeedDownload is definitely the culprit.
I'm thinking of writing an AppleScript Folder Action for my Desktop that renames .dms files to .dmg . PITA

Any of you guys knowledgeable enough to write a simple Applescript droplet that would replace .dms with .dmg?
Simple as dragging file "xyz.dms" on script icon and tadah : file renamed to "xyz.dmg"...
I bet that can easily be done if you know applescript well enough?
Thanks!!!

Better yet...make the developers of Speed Download II actually listen to feedback and fix their software since many, many people have had this issue come up...

I have NEVER seen one of my dmg downloads being turned into dms instead ( which is a diskpacker format for Amiga) I use Speeddownload too (the latest) And sometimes I download a dmg with safari too if Speeddownload does not catch it. Never been a problem. I'm on Panther too btw.
Sorry I do not have a solution.
