If they're personal folders and you're on an Exchange network, then I'm pretty sure you can drag your personal folders up to the server then, when you switch to your new Powerbook, you can use either Outlook 2001 (free) or Entourage (not free) to see those folders. Once you're connected to the Exchange server via your mac you should be able to drag those folders down to your local account in the folder list.

Both Outlook 2001 and Entourage v.X are by Microsoft, though Entourage is part of the Office suite so it's not free. I was never a really big fan of Entourage v.X on Mac OS X, but I had a chance to test out the upcoming Entourage 2004 and it's slick...

Good luck.

so i have to be on a network. i can't import the files directly. ok i'll try that. i haven't received my powerbook yet, but a while back a friend showed me an e-mail program that looked very neat and useful, but i don't know what it was. it had the feature to sort emails by "color" and neat things like that. any ideas?

the program itself is included with os x, but the .mac mail service is not free.

But .mac isn't required to use Mail. Mail can be used with any POP or IMAP account.

i have office.x but i use mail.app. so does my mother. but my father prefers entourage. go figure. there's no clear answer to this question -- some people prefer one or the other for various reasons. i prefer to have my apps separate and (relatively) sleek rather than have one huge center o' bloat, but that's just me

There are three main Email clients out for MacOS X:

Mail.app: Included with MacOS X, upgrades somewhat tied to the system version. It is a generally solid application and can work with: .Mac, POP3, IMAP, and Exchange servers. Good junk-mail filtering, respectable performance with folders with hundreds of items, but not as good with folders of thousands of messages. It also has a filtering/sorting system that can be extended with AppleScript. It plays well with the rest of MacOS X (ie AddressBook). This is my preferred mail client.

Entourage: A part of Office (not free, but a common application). This is many people's favorite, but not a favorite of mine. It supports Exchange, POP3, and IMAP servers. In my experience its support for IMAP is a bit buggy (as is they support for SSL). It is feature-rich, and many like the searching it provides. Large folders are definitely not a good idea as it uses a database to store the information, which is real bear to repair if it gets damaged.

Thundirbird: A free email client from the Mozilla project. A very strong contender if Mail.app does not suit your tastes. The junk-mail filer (default) is not as strong, but there are good add-ons. Since this project is very cross-platform, it is a good candidate for companies with a number of platforms. There is even a version of Mozilla for MacOS 8.6-9.

As to methods of switching, my preference is usually to route through IMAP, whenever possible. Mail.app will take a number of different formats, but I don't know if Outlook is among them. I would expect that Entourage does it, and I don't remember for Thunderbird.

FWIW, Entourage 2004 (out next month as a part of Office 2004) is supposed to have improved Exchange support.

I like Entourage, but I prefer mail. I don't use Exchange though, just POP mail.

I used to use Entourage, then switched to Mail as of Panther, but now that Entourage 2004 is out, I switched back to that. It's really hard to quantify what I specifically prefer in Entourage over Mail, but it's probably a bunch of little things that add up to a big enough reason to not use Mail.

And unfortunately, the new Entourage still sucks when used with Exchange.
