Just got a lacie 160GB Firewire External HD. Been searching the forums and I can't find the answer to this question.

What is the best solution to use the Lacie as a backup drive AND also to put extra data on it as well (video files transfered from camera, things like that). Should I partition the external so I use one for CCC and another partition for extra data? Or can it just be one partition and then I add extra folders to the root for these extra files?

Thanks

I personally would look at partitioning the drive. One as your back-up for your machine, the other for types of files.

I have a Lacie 250GB in five partitions. The first is the clone of my laptop. The remaining four are for documents, music, installers etc.

Any reason why you are not looking at SilverKeeper?

No real reason I haven't looked into silverKeeper other then that I want to have a bootable back-up. Dunno if I am right but sounds like CCC is the way to go? Since I have a .mac account I thought I would try that but I think I like the idea of having a full clone of my system that syncs....How do you like SilverKeeper? Any better or worse then CCC?

Thanks.

When I used SilverKeeper to copy my system, I checked, it was bootable. My HD is more for peace-of-mind than anything else.

I think SK is a good little utility so I never used CCC, though I do hear it is a good app as well.

I clone my entire system using a lacie external disk and CCC and find it works superbly. If you want you can still put files separately onto the Lacie drive without it causing any problems to CCC even when not partitioned. The only problem is of course that these files are not then backed up.
