Hello,
I have just got a 17" Powerbook G4 @ 1Ghz, and I want to rip some of my DVDs to my harddisk.
I want the files compressede to about 700 MB, so I can burn them on a normal CD.
I have tried Mencoder (Divx4), but I an not relly satisfied with the result :-( The quality is to bad - eventhough the file is 750 MB!
Any suggestions on a better ripper?

DVDBackup 1.3 - will rip the dvd...then you can just delete it after you watch it
you can even watch it with apple DVD player without doing ANY further compression.
This really should be added to the "What program should I use.." thread

I would say 0sex to rip it then using something like Diva, OpenShiiva or my favourite FFmpegX to code it. Am trying handbrake for the first time now so will report back. FfmpegX is very good as far as I'm concerned

I don't understand why you would want to do this but I vote Handbrake if you want to rip it where you can control the size nicely
http://handbrake.m0k.org/
But why would you want to burn it to a CD? doesn't that defeat the propose of ripping your DVDs? either way you will be carrying disc around.

but then you can fit more onto a single dvd - 5 films instead of one for example

I've been using Handbrake lately to just rip some DVDs for watching while I'm on the road. Good picture quality and sound and works nicely. And very simply. It's usually a 2 or 3 step process and then it's off and ripping. I do all of my ripping on the G5 so it does go relatively quickly.
