I use the Azureus bittorrent client and it takes over all the bandwidth available, which irritates my flatmates majorly. I know you can limit upload speed but is a way with azureus or any other client to limit the download speed too.

Any help would be good as it really does irritate him!

Cheers!

ASAIK if you limit the upload you also limit the download.

no it doesn't directly limit, only indirectly (as your download speed is meant to be proportional to your upload speed. However this doesn't apply when there are loads of seeds and so you upload very little of the file.

there is an app. that will do that for you ... can't remember the name though, it works in conjunction with Mac OS X's ipfw, there is also a bunch of scripts that will do this as well.

There's also Tomato (Tomato Torrent?) that makes it easy to limit the upload speed.

I've found it to be kind of crash prone on occasion, but only infrequently. And when it works, it works very well.

Yes, every BitTorrent client does that.

He's talking about DOWNLOAD speed.

The program Sarc is talking about is CarraFix. I believe it could handle download limiting as well. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7028

Unfortunately, the comments seem to indicate that it won't run properly in Panther.

Whoops. Better add reading comprehension to my 'to do' list.

My mind probably refused to grasp the concept that someone would want to limit download speed.

It will run in panther, however after the trial expires, it will stop doing it's job.

I thought Sarc ment dummynet (apparently not), which works with or is a part of IPFW (depending on how you look at it). It was supposed to be in 10.2, wasn't, wasn't in 10.3, might be in now after the updates, but it's a real shame it hasn't been enabled in XNU, it's very useful.

There's also Throttle/throttled, which is open source, avalible for OS X. On Windows, "Bandwidth Monitor" may do it, NetLimiter does but has limited features. Available in probably all current Linux distros.

Bittorrent peers focus on uploading to those who upload to them. This is often called "tit for tat". Seeders will upload to a peer irrespective of the peer's ratio. Best not to throttle anything with BT except to leave yourself some upload bandwidth should BT consume it all, you'll want to help the community, or at least get the file before the tracker goes down.
