I'm using Windows, and I have a bit of a problem...

All of my real songs are AAC files (ripping + iTMS), and therefore the other types, such as WAV and MP3, are usually just random noises. Quite frankly, I don't want these random noises added to my iTunes library!

For the longest time I've been trying to configure Quicktime to open these files, rather than iTunes...

...and this works. Until iTunes opens, and overwrite's Quicktime's settings, making itself the default player once again...

How do I avoid this, letting Quicktime play these files, without taking away iTunes' and Quicktime's positions as the default players (I don't want to start giving access to Winamp and Windows Media Player, etc....it's complicated enough as it is, just with Apple products).

Have you tried unchecking 'Use iTunes as the default player for audio files' in the General Preference menu?

You can then manage file types in the Windows Explorer so that iTunes still opens AAC files, but that should make iTunes leave the MP3s alone.

You could also uncheck the box next to the sound names in the iTunes library so they won't sync with your iPod or be played.

The problem, then, is that random programs get assigned to the types...Windows Media Player here, Winamp there...it's hard to keep track of.

Then you need to go into those apps and tell them not to take over automatically.

I always feel like there's some kind of war going on when I try to manage things like that on Windows.
