Having just upgraded to iTunes 4.5, I went from mild excitement to extreme chagrin. While converting my music library, iTunes became unresponsive. After a few minutes, Finder crashed as well.

Hoping that time would provide a remedy, I left both chugging away all night. Ultimately, I had to try force quitting (which didn't work) and then rebooting.

So now my entire music library is deleted. Thank merciful Hera for my iPod. Now I just need to remember how to transfer files over using Terminal. Could anyone provide a little assistance?

Other than that, I'm just posting for sympathy and pity. :/

There are many little apps to get music off of your iPod, no need for Terminal. And some do it in a nicely organized manner. I'm not sure if the Terminal organizes the music for you.

Anyway, that totally sucks about your library! iPod to the rescue! I'm going to be using iTunes' DVD backup option this weekend.

Speaking of one of those many little apps. I use PodWorks. The Best 8 bucks I ever spent.

Yeah, it might have just corrupted your playlist. I can't imagine it would delete all of your music files.

Yeah, it wasn't so much my library as it was the meta file. Still, I lost all my ratings and such. Oh, well. Sometimes starting over is best.

The same thing happened to me. I launched iTunes and it froze, then I closed it and reopened and my music library was gone. Just the meta file too.

Shouldn't that be a itunes library (old) file created when it updated to 4.5 for the first time?

Hey there,

First:

So now my entire music library is deleted. Thank merciful Hera for my iPod. Now I just need to remember how to transfer files over using Terminal. Could anyone provide a little assistance?
Followed by:

Yeah, it wasn't so much my library as it was the meta file.
There is a *major* difference between losing your "music library" and losing your "library meta file." Please be exact the first time around... no need to spread incorrect panic.

Hi. How can you backup your iTunes (say 'Purchased Music' or any library) with the DVD backup option. I just recieved a cool 8x DVD today and I have no idea how to backup my iTunes with it; rather, seems like I'm stuck using CD's. Otherwise, hear that one can copy a library (which one?) to an external hard drive.

Thanks; I'm quite confused by this.
