I've just noticed that if you rip a CD with iTunes you can't then burn those rips onto an MP3 CD.

Any thoughts on what the best solution to avoid this annoyance is? Should I always rip using another program or is there something else I can do? If so which one provides the best sound?

If you want to burn a mp3 CD you need to rip them as mp3. See iTunes->Preferences->Importing
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

True... I wish they had an automatic transcode method as it's difficult keeping track of which songs you have in which version.

I'm sure the audiophiles would freak out, but I can deal with transcoded AAC to MP3 if it's just for the car etc. It's not like I'm going to be playing it on a $100,000 stereo.

No kidding man. I'm betting the one's that scream the loudest couldn't tell the difference anyway. (Not that I can, but I realize that an encoded copy is just that, encoded)

yeah. my bad. I guess I have been encoding things as aac recently and just forgot.

Autotranscoding for mp3 disks would be great. This minor loss in sound quality is no big deal for me. I listen to these in the car...

It'll do "Convert selection to MP3" if you want... advanced menu I think. Not as simple as automatic but still fairly easy. It makes a copy too, doesn't replace original.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

Yah that's not a bad solution.

The automatic thing would give me the best of both worlds. I could keep all my music in AAC (which Apple tells me I want) AND have MP3 CD compatibility.

In the playlist view, you can add a column that shows the format.

It won't convert protected AAC (iTMS files) that way... still have to burn to CD first and re-rip as MP3.
