So, new version. Searched, couldn't find the thread. What you get:
1) A few more smilies
2) New icon
3) err... that's it.

Oh, and when people log in, the notification is now in the BOTTOM RIGHT rather that the TOP RIGHT!!!!?!?!11?!?!

What an upgrade.

Basically they needed an excuse to bring the icon into line with the upcoming ones for Office 2004.

there is only one word to describe this "upgrade":

sad
"You can't waste a life hating people, because all they do is live their life, laughing, doing more evil."

-ALPHA ROBERTSON,whose daughter was one of four girls killed in the bombing of a Birmingham, Ala., church in 1963.

the icon looks weird, more like a windows one and the program is littered with the old icon. Shoddy shoddy shoddy.
Oh they made the group font smaller too

Did anyone archive the "old" version? I accidently over-wrote. Normally I "Archive" before I update. Those icons are pure hideousness. THAT was enough to make it a "4.0" release?

UPDATE: Nevermind. Google helped me out. Microsoft's still got it up. Here

What are the new office icons gona look like? and yah they changed the icon, and one graphic in it... and they dropped support for certain proxy settings... fortunately their proxy settings were measly enough that I wasn't able to use it before and still can't at college. Oh well. The windows users can though which is lame.
But yah you'd think if they were gona rerelease it they'd at least change the whole interface if they're changing a major part like the icon... oh well. I think 2.1 was the last version that I said OK I can accept this as the Mac version. That said this one doesn't seem to be nearly as big of a proc hog which is good.

in the dock the online icon is not lined up with the other 3 variants, change your status and it will jump up, how lazy are they to miss things like that when creating the icons tsk tsk.
Although the fact it doesnt close all your conversations anymore when you go offline is nice

So as not to be a jerk and start a new thread over MSN Messenger 4 I brought this one back from the dead. I just downloaded it in hopes that it used a little bit less of my system resources than 3.5. For a while it seemed to work great. That was until I switched to another application while in a conversation. Much to my chagrin it flashes the window continuously no matter what when there's unread messages in a window. There's a reason I don't want the damn icon to bounce tontinuously, I don't want crap dancing and flashing on my screen unless I tell it to. Is there any way to make it stop this ridiculous behavior? I don't mind if I have to edit a .plist by hand or something, I just don't want the windows flashing in the background while I'm in another app.

This is patently absurd. The app overall runs much faster than 3.5 ever did and uses only 10% of my processor when I'm typing a message rather than 40%. For that reason alone I haven't switched back to 3.5 - yet. The flashing windows is more than enough to drive me back to the older version because I really can't stand flashing windows and jumping icons all over the place. I don't mind the icon bouncing once to let me know someone sent me a new message or an app bouncing as it loads. This flashing window behavior is nonsensical and really makes me want to visit the MBU with a bat and a mean look on my face.

now that Proteus supports File Transfers (wich work great btw.) and has support for MSN Avatars (still not fully functional, but quite close), you can trash M$'s client.

its a windows thing, thats how they try and grab your attention on windows. You'll learn to tune it out in a few weeks and never notice people have messaged you.

After posting last night I grabbed the latest Adium release and am planning to try Proteus after giving it a whirl. Both look fairly capable, as this point it will depend on which one annoys me the least.

*bashes forehead on desk*

Adium is a nice enough program but its interface leaves a lot to be desired. The contact list is ridiculously small and difficult to use. The text input box in chat windows is also pretty inconvenient. I know I can theme it but I'd rather not need to theme it in order for it to be usable.

I've also tried Proteus. I really like Proteus because it does all the stuff I want and lets me configure a lot of features. It also hooks right up to Address Book like iChat does so I don't need to hassle with my contacts. There's one super annoying feature to me, the automatic window raising. I can see when people send me a message, I don't need the window to jump to the fore to get my attention. Is there a way to turn this feature off or am I stuck with a 99% client? I'd be happy to pay for Proteus if I can just turn off that damn window popup feature.

Preferences -> Messages -> Behavior -> uncheck "Show new messages automatically"

Yaaaaaaay! Note to others, you need to restart Proteus to put this into effect (apparently).

How is the text input underneath the message view inconvenient?

The text input box in Adium is really small and lacks a border. It's strange for me typing in a text box with no visual cues that it is active. Proteus' text input box doesn't have a border but it is a bit larger and a little more plainly visible.

Proteus doesn't want to listen to the "Show new messages automatically" setting and keeps popping the damn windows up. Is it is a bug in the current version or is there some other setting to control that behavior?
