I have scanned a number of documents as TIFFs that I need to make into a single PDF. My procedure to date has been to open up each tiff in Macromedia Fireworks or in Preview, then Save as PDF. I then join the documents together using Acrobat.

The problem is that this yields hideously large files. What steps can I take to reduce the file size of the finished product while keeping it readable onscreen and in print?

There is really no way to properly shrink TIFF files as it's a lossless format.

I would convert them to jpg at 100% quality and them join them all as PDF.

Makes sense to me. I'll try it.

If it's white text or only a few shades of a color etc. go with a gif.

Before I upgraded to Panther, I used PdfCompress to compress my PDF files to a more manageable size.

Haha, Farmington, my god. Hey there, neighbor!

I don't know if you have access to this, but I would simply use Adobe InDesign to lay out the pages, and then adjust its "Export to PDF" settings to meet the file quality and size settings that you'd like.

I think you'll have a much easier and more flexible time this way.
Hi. Nice to see you. You look lovely.

Just use the built in compression...

• open file in app and choose print

• choose "colorSync" from the menu "Copies & Pages"

• select the "quartz filter' menu, choose "reduce file size" OR select "Add Filters"...

• "Add Filters" will open the document in colorSync where you can setup a new filter to choose the compression and size etc.

have fun
sheesh, that took 8 hours for me to be asked to change my sig...
