I'm a new switcher to mac (just got an iBook). I was wondering if there are any avi file preview programs for mac? Kazaa came with one for windows, and it was an extremely handy program to watch incomplete downloaded *.avi files.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Welcome, this LINK should answer that question. If you look under "View video files", you'll notice that Mplayer and VLC will play the .avi files for you. Just a kind reminder to use the search button before posting. Thanks.

Ah, I haven't tried it myself, guess I thought it might do the trick.
MPlayer will do it too I'm sure.

It will, though i suspect VLC will be better at it. Since it's also used for eMule for instance.

True. Is VLC still being maintained on OS X? I remember reading that you were kinda stepping back from it for a while. Is that still happening?

Only the most basic parts are being maintained.

Which translates to: no groundbreaking new interface work etc from my side. Since the core is collectively developed. it won't suffer that much.
Besides some people are working on VLC OSX. But they are both just starting to learn the mac. We still need a more experienced mac programmer, and a coreaudio specialist would be nice as well.

The Quicktime Player what comes with your Mac will play .avi files (at least with Quicktime Pro, but I believe you don't need the Pro version to play them).

QTP is something that is DEFINETLY not suited for incomplete avi previewing. It won't even allow you to open the file.
Read questions before you answer.
