is there any software that will disable the need for the FN key? i'd like to be able to directly access my F1-F11 keys without having to hold down the FN modifier since i use the F-keys a lot more than i change my brightness and sound settings and num lock.

Are you running 10.3.3? If so, it's built-in now as a choice via:

System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Tab

Make sure "Use F1-F12 keys for custom actions" is checked...
