Can you tell iphoto where to store your pictures or just link them to a reference file? I am sitting here wondering why I am running out of space on my HD and just figured out that I have double copies of all my photos, I figured out how to do it in itunes, but I need to do the same with iphoto and can't find it in the preferences. Thanks.

Nope. Unfortunately, iPhoto insists on copying all photos and organizing them in its own way.
Be sure to tell Apple to make this an option, like iTunes, via their feedback page.

Well, if you have doubles, why don't you delete the originals and let iPhoto manage them? That way you will only have one set

You can, however, move your iPhoto library folder (and all the associated files) to an external drive if you wish. I've been doing this for a while.
