Ok, I'm extremely embarrassed, but I'm going to ask:

I have a random smart playlist of 50 songs setup in iTunes. Yes, it does have "Live updating" checked.

To my knowledge, this playlist has never once changed since the initial 50 songs were selected.

Should it be selecting a new 50 random songs every time I click on it? Or is there a way to force it to update? Or am I completely misunderstanding?

Thanks,

Wade

When you create a Smart Playlist, you're supposed to enter some search condition, such as "Artist is The Beetles" or "Last Played is not in the last 2 Weeks" or "Play Count is less than 10"

The songs listed in the Smart Playlist match those conditions. If the status of a song changes, because you edited its ID tag, or you played the song and its "Last Played" and Play Count" stats got updated, then the Smart Playlist will update itself.

If your Smart Playlist has no search conditions, then it has no reason to update itself, since all your songs are possible matches.

Aha! Now that makes perfect sense.

Should have figured that one out - thanks for the help.

Wade:

Your playlist will do as it should if you select all of your initial 50 songs and then delete them from the playlist. Another 50 songs will immediately come up and replace them. Why not just use party shuffle now, though?

rather than start another iTunes playlist thread...

i have a load of miscellaneous songs in a folder, which i get over iChat, or whatever. i want to target a Smart Playlist to live update that folder, so it just picks up whatever is in there. i don't seem to be able to though. am i missing something really obvious, or is it not possible to make a Smart Playlist from just the contents of a folder?

iTunes doesn't use a file's location as a smart playlist condition. You can add a comment to each of your downloaded, and then create a playlist that searches for that comment.
