OK.

So I download the free version and install it.

I understand that the plugin for QT will let me play DivX movies from within QT.

But where is the encoding capability?

I read the docs and they never point to any application in particular.

Mencoder 0.77 (latest) only shows support for DivX 4 at best.

How are the rest of you using DivX 5.1?

Better yet, what do you recommend for ripping DVD's and other video?

QuickTime Pro ($30) is the standard way to encode video (in general) with QT codecs. For DVDs (with DivX or 3ivx and not the open-source knock-offs (ffmpeg and MEncoder)), see here and/or here. Also you should know that QT is an API framework, in addition to being an application (QuickTime Player (Pro)) and a media format (mov), which means that any developer can access the advanced features of the framework and provide them to users free of charge (for example ConvertToQT and DiVA), or with more features (Cleaner, LiveStage Pro, etc). I know it's sometimes hard to search for such programs without already knowing what they are, so if you have any more specific questions you can ask them as they arise and I'm sure someone will point you in the right direction.

Have you downloaded the free version?, if I am not wrong there is a Pro version to do encode. Or maybe it is not available to the Mac

no, the pro version adds encoding options like (I'm not sure exactly which ones) b-frames, gmc, q-pel and other advanced stuff that's generally of questionable benefit anyway. And maybe deinterlacing or in-codec cropping or something. I'm pretty sure you can encode with the free version.

Would never use Pro version. Used to encode lots of DivX and every new version introduced some problems with so called pro features like q-pel.

So my little neighbor (15 years old) has an iMac DV and gots avi movies from the pc-friends, what exactly do she needs to watch them into QT?, yes I know, she also uses VLC and / or mplayer, but I think the QT for all option is just easier and more desirable.

I installed divx 5.1 and I still get this message

"You may experience problems playing a video track in "eurotrip.dvdrip.xvid-deity.avi" because the required compressor could not be found. Would you like to close the more or continue?"

If hit continue i get audio and no video.

That's because it's XVID (see the filename), yet another MPEG-4 derivative. Get the XVID Delegate component or the 3ivx codec.

Hi!

Is there a way to select which codec will handle a certain video format, in case there are multiple codecs installed that can potentially be used (like DivX and 3ivX codec to decode a DivX file)?

VLC for all might be an even easier option.

This is a mysterious feature of Cellulo, but I think it may not work with the current version of 3ivx for some reason.
