Okay, I've got dial-up internet access from access4less.net (one of those cheap 5 bucks a month services that charges you for tech support). It works great and has good speed as far as modems go.
I am a student at Humboldt State University, so I have a pretty cool email account from there: POP or IMAP 10MB, nice spam filtering.
I want to use Mac OS X's Mail with my HSU account, but it won't work when I'm connected to access4less. I can send mail from my account with no problems, but it will not connect. Mail gives the following error:
------------------------------
Connection Failed
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account “gpw3” or try again.
The server error encountered was: The attempt to read data from the server “pop.humboldt.edu” failed.
------------------------------
I've gone to the help desk at my school and they told me I had everything configured correctly. The free email tech support completely ignores what I asked and tells me the mail server addresses for that account.
The server addresses in question:
Incoming: pop.humboldt.edu
Outgoing: smtp.humboldt.edu (this works fine)
Also of interest, I can access my mail PERFECTLY when connected via ethernet at work or on the wireless network at school! I've subscribed to this topic with the email subscription, so if you need any information just post requesting it. I'll respond as soon as possible.
