I don't think you can delete the default genres. Custom ones disappear when you've eliminated all the songs that use them.

no that's not true. I picked up some crazy genres when I added some radio-streams to my library once. I've deleted the streams long ago, but the genres still stick..

Thats odd, whenever I delete all of the songs with a genre the genre goes away. What happens if you click on that genre? What shows up if you deleted all of the streams with that genre?
Otherwise the only slightly faster way of removing a genre is to click on it then select all and change all the songs at once.

After highlighting all the songs you want to change, press command-I to bring up the Show info window, then change the genre there. It will change it for all the songs.
This is handy for changing things like equalizer presets and album graphics at the same time.

what does the "part of a compilation" option have to do with anything?
what does checking / unchecking it change?
thanks.

I would recommend selecting ALL the songs in iTunes and checking "No" next to "part of a compilation". When a song or album import into iTunes as "part of a compiliation" it makes it harder to keep all the files and folders in your "iTunes/iTunes Music/" folder organized.

There is no difference as far as iPod presentation. The difference appears to be solely with how the iTunes folder structure is maintained. "Part of a Compilation" actually helps keep your music folder organized. Typically, iTunes will create a folder named for the "Artist" then store each album from that artist (as long as you spell the name identically) as a folder within that artist's folder. If you select "compilation" then, instead of creating 12 artist folders with one song from the compilation album in each folder, iTunes will create a folder named with the album title and store all the individual songs from multiple artists within that folder.
