From this article: <http://www.macworld.com/2004/03/feat...e2004firstlook> comes the following:
If you buy Office v. X before June 30, 2004, Office 2004 will cost you little or nothing. Upgrading to the same edition is free; upgrading from the v. X Standard Edition to the 2004 Professional Edition costs $90 (emphasis mine). If you have the academic edition of v. X, upgrading to the 2004 Standard Edition is $90 and upgrading to the Professional Edition is $129. Upgrade pricing for registered users of Office 98 remains unchanged: $329 for the Professional Edition and $239 for the Standard Edition.
Yet if you look at Microsoft's site as of now:
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/product...x?pid=howtobuy>
there is no mention of the upgrade path from v. X Standard to 2004 Pro for $90.00, which coincidentally happens to be the path I want.

Did Microsoft pull off a bait-and-switch here?

That's it! I looked at that page before and missed the line pertaining to me.
*Gulp* Sorry, Microsoft! I stand corrected.

No, you were right 1st. I remember hearing that during the keynote. It was existing users $99, new purchases free.

Sounds like B&S to me.

It is free if you want to go from v.X Standard to 2004 Standard, but he wants to upgrade to 2004 Professional -- essentially all he'd have to pay for is VPC.

I purchased Office v. X when I bought my PowerBook. I read several articles describing the upgrade path, which seemed to change over time. I can't seem to link to the $99 upgrade
path window. Can someone post the link again? All I see for my Upgrade path is $239 from v. X standard to Standard 2004.

If you bought it v.X after Jan 6 then you can get a "free" plus shipping upgrade at http://www.microsoft.com/mac/default...d=office2004tg

I don't recall ever hearing that the upgrade would cost $99, anyone have a link to info about that? All I recall is the technology guarantee for people who bought Office v.X after the Office 2004 announcement.

Yeah that's the technology guarantee. I think they thought the upgrade for people who bought v.X before January 6 would cost $99.

I imagine that the Pro installer first checks for a valid installation of the earlier version before proceeding.

I'm not sure about elsewhere, but here in NZ I've just bought an S&T copy of v.X in order to get a nice cheap upgrade to S&T 2004, hopefully before too long - although the small print on the form says to allow 6-8 weeks for delivery (I'm hoping this is just to cover their backs.... )

Anyway, the form says you need to supply them with either: the original box top from your eligible to upgrade product, or the original title page from the manual. So that will be how they're checking that you've really got what you say you have .
