Does anyone know of a contacts manager and calendar that can have a shared database usable by Windows and OS X users across a LAN?

Does MS Outlook do that? Does it do it well? What is needed to run it?
How about Now Up-to-Date?

Has anyone actually used either in this implementation?

From reading these forums, it seems that MS Exchange server is one solution. Are there any others?
