My parents (running Panther) bought iLife 04, and after the iPhoto 3 to 4 upgrade at least four things are messed up:

1. Long-deleted photos are now back, cluttering the Library

2. Other photos appear twice in the Library now--more clutter

3. The existing film rolls aren't accurate anymore--some rolls are now "mixes" of photos from entirely separate rolls (new rolls added since 4 are OK)

4. Option-Shift rebuilding the library simply resulted in a crash near the end--not a hard crash, but a bug-report dialog--and afterwards the library is not fixed (but they only tried once--can't blame them)

Any first-aid tips? Any way to get the film rolls back to being accurate, and safely eliminate all the new clutter? (My parents' albums are there, and ideally we don't want to lose those--nor do we want to lose several NEW imported rolls done since the upgrade)

(They have a DVD backup of most--not all.)

Thanks for any leads/links--my searching has not turned up these particular symptoms.

Can't help on most of your problems, but for duplicate removal, you might try iPhoto Diet. It will delete duplicates, and does have some other preferences you can set. That would help some, I think. Good luck!

Thanks, I'll look into that. What causes the duplicates fixed by iPhoto Diet? Are duplicates something people get with iPhoto sometimes?

can't say I've ever had a duplicate problem with iPhoto - but you might want to search if you're really interested.

PS, it was an iPhoto 2 -> 4 upgrade. There was no iPhoto 3.

Good point. 2.0 was indeed the previous version.

I've searched all over and not found the same problem. That's good! (Maybe not for my parents, though.)
