For some reason the 'Add' option is greyed out in the contextual menus in Office when I click on a red-underlined word. Doing theology I add many esoteric words - the first one that it wouldn't allow me to add, for example, was homoousios I wouldn't expect the dictionary to get filled up though! Is there a limit to the number of words you're allowed to know, or am I missing something?

Check the preferences and make sure that a custom dictionary file is defined. It requires one before it will work.

That's it! I don't know why, but my custom dictionary has disappeared! How annoying. Still, thanks for the tip-off.

Just as a matter of interest, had you been trying out the Test Drive version of Office 2004 and then deleted it? My custom library has also just gone west, and I strongly suspect that this is the reason. Looks like the uninstaller has got carried away.

Oh well, there go two years and more of customised words, not to mention the autocorrect entries I added.

Mine too. I tried it out, decided to wait on the upgrade so I deleted it. Custom Dictionary vanished. Now I have to create a new one. Any idea where that is supposed to go? Perhaps in my ~/Library ?

Unfortunately the Remove Test Drive (or any other flavor of Remove Office) will remove any custom dictionary it finds in the ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/ folder.
To prevent this sad situation, just tell Office apps to have your custom dictionary live somewhere else (like the Microsoft User Data folder in the Documents folder).
To do this, go to Preferences in the Office app (like for Word it would be Word/Preferences...) then click on Spelling and Grammar, then click on Dictionaries... button by Custom Dictionaries. You can change the location there, and this will avert the Remove app from deleting it.
Again, I am sorry this happened. http://forums.macnn.com/newreply.php...readid=214261#
