I've been talking to people, and I'm not the only one that experiences this. More and more Safari keeps locking up for a few moments as you use it. It happens more and more often, and the delays keep getting longer and longer. For instance, if you click the scroll bar and drag it to scroll, safari will lock up for a second or two, then scroll. Of if you click in a text field and start to type, nothing will happen for a few seconds, then everything you typed will go automatically. Sometimes you even get a glimpse of the beach ball. Now i'm on a fast dual G4 with a TON of ram and a very fast HD. I have no idea what's causing this but its getting infuriating!

Emptying caches has no effect. One thing i actually did was re-download safari, throw my copy out, and used the new one. And for about a day, things were great. Safari was truly FLYING. Then the lags just came right back, they even seem like they've gotten a bit worse.

If there are lots of animated gifs on the page Safari will seem to lock up as it deals with its crappie CPU handling.

Can use Safari Enhancer to deactivate caches. That helps. also, if you have autofill on for everything, go into preferences and edit/clean the lists out. Those will bog down Safari to a crawl.
Finally, use pithhelmt to manage animated gifs (and block annoying ads that aren't popups).

Try:

1. Empty your ~/Library/Safari/Icons folder.
2. Set ~/Library/Safari/Icons folder to Read Only.
