Hi all,

My brother has a feature through his DirectTV service that shows the caller ID info on his big screen TV when a call comes in, is there something like this available for the Mac? I was wondering if I hooked up the modem to a phone jack, is there anything that can do this? I don't need it to be an answering machine, but if I'm working on the computer, it would be nice to know who's calling before I get up (or decided IF I'm getting up). Thanks.

I actually looked into writing a program like that, but from what I could gather, I don't believe the modems that Apple ships support caller id. :/

somehow it does support it.
there is this very expensive software for Mac OS X (can't remember the name right now) that does a bunch of stuff with telephones (answering machine, etc), among other things, it has caller ID.

You may be thinking of Ovolab Phlink. But I think that uses a telephone adapter to get the caller ID. There was an old OS 9 app (which may have been updated for OS X) that also showed caller ID, called CID Tracker I think, but I don't think it worked with Apple modems.

This is something I was really hoping that Apple would build into Address book.

as stated before, the Mac modems don't handle caller ID.

Ovolab Phlink is the way to go... I'm really looking in to buying one of these for various reasons. Home automation being one of them...
