I'm not sure what's going on here... I'm using AEBS and I have BitTorrent client 3.4.2. I can't get myself connected with peers or whatever? Does this have to do with port opening 6881 and 6889? I have already added these port opening in my Aiport Admin Utility. Why is this happening?? Am I missing something?

Maybe there are no seeds. How old is the torrent?

what error code does bittorrent report ?
is the torrent from a certain kick-ass site ?
if so, yo need to do some changes to your hosts file (check the certain kick-ass's forums)

Not just those ports, but all ports from 6881 through 6999. Frankly, the easiest way to do this is to whip up a quick script that saves the info to a text file, then import the text file. I've got one that I did in Python; I'll post it later tonight.

Also, make sure that you've got the ports mapped to your specific IP address. This can be annoying, because the DHCP-assigned IP addresses are liable to change when the machine disconnects from the network. This is why I only use BitTorrent on my desktop machine, which is on a wired connection and set to never sleep.

Also, as others have pointed out, it's possible that there are no seeds. If there aren't any seeds, then you're out of luck; the download will almost certainly never finish. It's the one major weakness of BitTorrent; once the seeds are gone, you're dependent on the kindness of someone willing to start seeding again, and that assumes that the downloaders haven't all deleted the .torrent files already.

no error code occured.. Just '0' connect to peers.. forever! Nothing changes or whatever.. Just stay '0' peers. Yes from kick-ass site.

Probably still a firewall issue..
Its easy to unintentionally have 3 firewalls on with macs these days. Is the Mac OS one turned off? Does your Modem have a firewall too? Did you definitely open the ports ok in your ABS?

As for DHCP and port mapping to IP numbers.. It depends on the modem/firewall/router.
for example, my powerbook uses a local IP number of 10.0.0.2 (In internet setup, I use DHCP with a manual IP, so it cant change). My Netgear Modem/router requires that any ports I open, are opened for a specific local IP number. Obviously if they are assigned to the wrong local ip number, then it just isnt going to work. Not all modem/routers work like this however. My friends Belkin modem/router opens ports for all local ip numbers I believe, rather than specific ones.
Good luck

Maybe, but I can't move posts in this forum, or I'd have done it myself. Since I can't, I figured I may as well try to help him out here until the thread is moved.

But yes, for future reference, this thread really belonged in the Software forum.

My advice is to download a BT client called Azureus. It is very useful for troubleshooting, since it not only tells you how many peers you're connected to but also if your network topology is preventing you from connecting at all.

You might want to check if your ISP has some packet sniffing program to limit P2P bandwidth. It took me a long time to figure out why I couldn't connect to any peers on my University's network, it's because everyone on the whole network is competing for a tiny amount of P2P bandwidth.

Arghhh!!!!!

I am still having a problem connecting... When I opened a torrent file and it says with zero peers and nothing had happened -- no downloading started for a long time. I did add port 6881-6889 in my Airport Extreme Base station.

HELP!!!

Try hooking your computer up directly to the modem (i.e. bypass the base station, just temporarily for troubleshooting purposes).

Actually, plenty of stuff is distributed via BitTorrent perfectly legally - including most Linux distros.

Yes, there are legal uses for BitTorrent, but the website in question was not for said legal uses, even if there are one or two legitimate files on that site.
