Many times I leave downloads on my home computer or at the office, and I want to check up on their status.
Could it be possible, using an Apache-AppleScript combo, to use an applescript app. to specify download name, size and file location to a temp. file or log, then have the app. compare the downloaded file's size against the size you specified say, every 5 minutes or something, calculate percentage completed, ETA (if possible), etc, and dump it into an HTML file, wich you can later access from anywhere using Mac OS X's built in Apache ?

Anyone think of a better way to do it ? PHP maybe ?
Anyone with AppleScript knowlege want to code it ?
Opinions ?

Considering you can just use curl, wget, or (if DCCing) a console-based irc client, you can just use screen and ssh into the box remotely to get your download status.

Coding an app to post this download status would of course be dependent on what app you are using to download these files.

true, but the idea is that this app. could monitor status for example of bittorrent, carracho, whatever, as well as AFP, FTP, etc.

It wouldn't be of much help for BitTorrent, since BT pre-allocates the entire file size before it starts downloading anything. As soon as you started the download, it would appear to be 100% finished.

Uh, it hasn't done this since 3.3.

Hmm. I must be using an older client; time to upgrade.

what about VNC? that would be an easy way to check your status.

true, but in reality it's unusable.
for instance at home I have 256k down ... and when I use them, any incoming connection becomes dog slow.
also it has the disadvantage of needing special software (VNC, granted, it's free, but not found on most computers). Plus I can't ger VNC to work on Panther (must be something with the fast user switch feature).
With this app. you could check your status with any browser, anywhere, requiring very little bandwith on both sides.
