I have QuickTime Pro, but for some reason (I don't know if it had anything to do with the recent OS X 10.3.4 update) I can no longer edit anything. Under Edit in the Menu Bar, the Cut, Copy, Paste commands are grayed out. When I select a portion of the movie using the selection markers, I cannot even delete it.
I've gone to my preferences to make sure my registration code is correct. I don't know what else to check. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Probably the movie you're trying to edit is muxed.

Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

or to be less confusing, QuickTime can't edit MPEG 1 or 2 media. In QT4 it would let you make edits, but instead of altering the media it would just remember the edits and display it differently. In QT 5 the menu options were disabled for MPEG media but the key commands still worked. In QT 6 it was fully disabled.
PS: afaik the term muxed (or multiplexed, the combining of video and audio) also applies to other formats that QT can edit, such as mov, mp4 and avi.

Thanks for the explanation, I wasn't familiar with the term "muxed." It is very possible that the movie I am trying to edit is MPEG 1 or 2 media. Is there a work around?

Convert if to a Quicktime native format, then you can edit that.

On an entirely related and relevant note:

For that to be analagous, wouldn't BMW, Mercedes and Porsche have to require different roads in order to operate in a useful fashion? Or maybe different gas.

strip them with this first, piece them back together, and then do whatever you need to do to them.

uh-huh, yeah that won't change anything. QuickTime can't edit demuxed MPEG 1 or 2 audio or video any better than it can when they're muxed. You have to re-encode them to a format QT does like.
