I like to use several browser, being one of then Netscape 7.1, but I find that it loves RAM so much

So, would be Mozilla a better option?, Could I check my Netscape mail account on it?

Thanks.

Mozilla and Netscape are the same thing basically, except that Netscape is usually based on an older version of Mozilla than the latest and adds a bunch more useless crap to make it even more bloated, such as fubaring the location bar so that if you type, say, macnn, it doesn't resolve to http://www.macnn.com/ but instead does some idiotic Netscape Search thing for macnn.

Mozilla is a little less annoying, but still quite big, bloated, and RAM-hungry. However, Mozilla FireFox is a completely different story. If you've been using Mozilla/Netscape, you should switch to FireFox, as it's the same thing, only much smaller, leaner, faster, and just generally better. It's available at http://www.mozilla.org/

Other browsers worth checking out on the Mac are Camino, Safari, OmniWeb, and Shiira. They're all quite nice. If you want to use Netscape's mail client, download Thunderbird (also at www.mozilla.org). It's a separate application now, so you can use it no matter what browser you use. Also, you might want to look at the Mail application that comes with OS X - it's very nice as well.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Netscape 7 is horrible. Absolutely horrible. There's no reason to use it instead of Mozilla.

But Firefox is even better than Mozilla. I recommend the Firefox + Thunderbird combo in place of the full Mozilla suite.

Thanks, lets see:

I use Mail only for my .mac account, could sound paranoic, but well...

So I can use ThunderBird as the way to get my Netscape account mail, is it difficult to set up?, could it import the Netscape Mail settings?, (I am downloading it just now, excuse me not being patient).

I use iCab as main browser, yes I know it lacks CSS until version 3 hit the streets, but it have a bunch of options I can not live without them. Maybe I could use Safari as my second choice.

Thanks in advance.

OK, Thunderbird installed but...

every time I try to get mail, this message is shown:

Failed to connect to server
imap.mail.netcenter.com. (OK)

I have filled the setup with the same info that Netscape has The mail account settings are, in fact, a mimic from the Netscape one.

So, what is going wrong?

I don't know anything about Netscape mail. If it's an IMAP server then why don't you just use Mail.app? Perhaps it requires you to use SSL authentication? Are you sure all of the settings (including SSL, etc.) are the same between both the working and the not-working apps?

Thanks for your reply. I have tried it with and without SSL, no luck

I found it, silly me I must have read it before

Can I access my Netscape WebMail or Hotmail accounts through Thunderbird?

No. Netscape WebMail and Hotmail use proprietary protocols. To access WebMail directly through an e-mail client requires you to use Netscape 6+ with AIM; to do so with Hotmail requires either Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. There are also freeware applications available that will let you do the same thing, such as Hotmail Popper.

Another example is Gotmail, which is a utility to non-interactively download email from a Hotmail account. It can download messages from all folders, messages from certain folders, or new messages only. There are options to delete downloaded messages or mark them as read. Gotmail can forward messages to other email addresses or save them as local mbox-style mailboxes.

Of course, you can access your WebMail account on the Web at http://webmail.netscape.com/, or Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com/. If you use Microsoft Messenger, clicking on the appropriate link will open your default browser and take you to your inbox.

Oh great, I can not delete the RAM hungry Netscape suite.

Sounds like a really crappy mail service. I'd rather get a new email account (even a paid one) than be stuck using Netscape.

Sorry. I guess you're out of luck.

Don´t worry wataru, I am plenty of mail accounts (one of them being a paid one, yes .mac), it was only that I feel that Netscape is really bloated (aka RAM lover), not by mention the almost 60 MB size of the applicaition !!

Not only is it bloated, but it's also based on a version of Mozilla so old that its CSS support is absolutely terrible. I really got fed up with it last time I designed a website. Do yourself a favor and get rid of it!
