Yesterday, I had an urgent need to password protect some zip files, so I found ZipIt and registered it.

However, half of the menu commands just don't work most of the time- they are greyed out, but randomly become available without doing anything besides clicking on different parts of the interface. Sometimes menu items are available, but flicking to another menu and back causes the item to be greyed out again, so it can't be used.

I have mailed the author but not heard back. In fact, the software seems to be abandonware as it has not been updated since 2002 .

Is anyone else out there successfully using ZipIt on OS X 10.3.4?

PS. is it possible to password protect zip files from the command line?

There's a open source command line zip program that comes with fink: http://fink.sourceforge.net/pdb/package.php/zip

From the man page, it looks like it supports password protection. If the user you're sending the files to is a mac user, might I suggest using an encrypted disk image. It's less of a hassle.

What are the command line options out of interest? I checked the help file for the zip included with OS X and there wasn't anything obvious in there. Perhaps the password features are just undocumented? Got to be worth a try rather than installing the whole of fink just to get command line zip

Thanks for your help tho

Andy
